Heroes

Cancer has always been one of those things you hear about and want to do something to help solve, but it still seems distant. Then, it hits someone in your family (usually older) and it becomes more real, but is still someone acceptable as a disease people encounter later in life. Every so often, though, one case will come out of left field and really leave you reeling. Such was the case with my friend Herman.

Sometime last year, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This really shook me because he’s not but a couple years older than me. Herman, his wife Angie and their two boys lived next door to us for a while, and even though they’ve moved, they are still some of our best friends in San Antonio. I just remember Tiffany and I feeling so helpless.

I have to say, though, that watching him fight through this thing for the last few months has been pretty amazing. And man, Angie, is inspiring too. She holds their family together during the bad weeks. Herman, jumps in and does everything he can during the good weeks. He’s also been blogging the entire expirience. I’d recommend reading it if you want to see a picture of determination and appreciating life. I’ve included him in my blog roll for the very reason that many should read his story.

I’d also recommend that if you get a chance, you take part in any effort you can for cancer research or treatment. We joined a team for Herman in the Light the Night walk bak in the fall. It was a great experience. We even took Keith with us. He didn’t completely understand everything, but at least he was there for his buddies.
